On March 5, 2017, W. Earline Love laid her soul to rest.  Earline was born on November 25, 1918, at the family (Badgley) ranch, south of Gallatin Gateway (Salesville), MT, on Little Bear to Lillie (Poor) and Earl Badgley.  She attended the one room Little Bear Elementary School on Big Bear, down the road from the Badgley ranch.  She graduated from Gallatin High School in 1938.

As the oldest female of six children, in her words, while the other kids got to be outside working with the animals and other ranch chores, she spent her time in the kitchen with her mom, cooking for everyone including her dad’s thrashing crews.

After graduating high school, Earline moved to southern California to live with her uncle, Lloyd Badgley, where she worked in an insurance office.  She enlisted in the Navy in 1944.   Earline was stationed in New York and Farragut, Idaho, (north of Coeur d'Alene) until her discharge from the Navy in 1946.  She then moved back to the El Monte, California, area where she met her husband, Phil Love.  Earline and Phil were married in Napa, California, on Oct. 15, 1956. Their wedding might not have happened had it not been for her sister Marguerite’s husband, Dan, who said to the couple “it is time to put these beers down or you’re going to miss your own damn wedding.”

Earline and Phil lived in the El Monte area where Earline worked for AeroJet for many years.  In fact, her handprint is on one of the early shuttles sent to the moon and resides there still today (Badgley DNA on the moon – who knew!).  Earline and Phil moved to Paradise Valley in 1969.  They owned and operated the fish hatchery across the road from Emigrant for 16 years.  They moved from there back to the Gallatin Valley in 1985, upon retirement, where Earline lived until her passing.  For many of her later years and until her passing at the age of 98, she resided by herself, very contently, independently, and stubbornly - all in Badgley style.

She loved needle point, reading, music, being in the mountains picking Sarvisberries, Chokecherries, and Oregon Grapes, canning and baking cookies.  She was a very strong lady whom many of us got our strength from.  Earline – you are our butterfly, free to fly home, in peace.  We will always know that you are one set of wings upon our shoulders.  Goodbye my sweet lady.

Earline was preceded in death by her parents, Earl and Lillie (Poor) Badgley; husband, Phil Love; Paul and Marie Bryan, OB and Georgie Badgley, Jack and Erma Brenner, Gerald Badgley, Dannette Newey-Vine, Gary Brenner, Gene Badgley, Scott Love, Tyrone Love Jr., Shirley Love, and several other loved ones.

She is survived by stepsons, Jerome Love and Tyrone Love; stepdaughter, Sharon Bradley and numerous nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, great-great-nieces and nephews, step-grandchildren and great-grandchildren.  She had a huge family support system: Mark Bryan, Elaine Hutton, Carol Bryan, Rock and Alexis Bryan, Lee Newey, Rita Newey, Jackie and Tammy Alverson, Big Wayne, Gary Brenner and Gene Badgley (until their passing), Jerome and Tyrone and Danny Love, Dawna and Sonja Brinkel and Rory Erhard, Nicquo and Shane Hope…to name a few (apologies to those we missed).  A huge thanks to all of you. She was an enormous bit of the glue for this family.

A special thanks to the Gallatin Nursing Home staff, Frontier Home Health, and Home Care Services.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, March 13th at 11:00 a.m. at Dokken-Nelson Funeral Service.  Interment with military honors will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Earline’s name to any of these wonderful service agencies, Gallatin County Historical Society or the American Legion (Gallatin Chapter).
