Vere Palmer

August 4, 1943 ~ March 09, 2017

Service: March 28, 2017 1:00 PM
   Location: Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel

Vere Lewallen Palmer, 73, passed away March 9, 2017, at home in Belgrade, MT.  He was born August 4, 1943, to Oatis and Mertis (Wenneson) Palmer in Seattle, WA.  Vere lived in Shoshoni and Casper, WY, graduating from Natrona Co. High School.  He attended trade school for plumbing and pipefitting, and worked in construction as a plumber, pipefitter, welder and structural framer.

He married Rose Gourneau in 1965 and together they raised four children.  They later divorced.  In 1987 he met his soulmate, Heidi Doden, of Iowa, and they were married in 1995 in Jackson, WY. They loved spending time with their dogs, fishing, enjoying the great outdoors, and rafting down many rivers with their family and friends. Vere was a fantastic storyteller, keeping those around him laughing and entertained. He was also a talented Jack-of-all-trades and expert huntsman, and loved attending Mountain Man Rendevous and black powder shoots. He even appeared in two mountain man documentaries in the 1980’s, including the movie The Mountain Man. He was a member of the Elks Club in Casper, WY, and the American Legion in Manhattan, MT.

Vere was preceded in death by siblings, Marian Prophet and Ames Palmer; and his parents, Oatis and Mertis Palmer.  He is survived by his wife, Heidi; four children, Lee (Christy) Palmer, Kevin (Jennifer) Palmer, Shane (Lori) Palmer, and Robert (Regan) Palmer; sister, Marie Spethman; ten grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

Donations may be made in Vere’s name to Make-A-Wish America Gift Processing, 4742 North 24th St., Ste. 400, Phoenix, AZ 85016.

Memorial services will be held Tuesday, March 28th at 1 p.m. at Dokken-Nelson Sunset Chapel with interment to follow at Meadow View Cemetery in Manhattan.  At 3 p.m. a reception will be held at the American Legion in Manhattan.
